So I downloaded, for fun, the 48MB Damn Small Linux operating system and ran it. I wanted to see what an OS scaled down to the max might look like. So I tried installing Automatix, a program supposed to help install useful programs on Linux. What a great idea, except that it got half way through installing JRE and froze. OK, this is where I take back some of the nice things I said.
My installation of OpenOffice is proving inordinately complicated. OpenOffice won’t install without JRE and JRE can’t be installed without fiddling in the Terminal as a root user. Following Java’s instructions is no help however, because Xubuntu doesn’t apparently have a root user [...]
