Design Festa!

Last weekend I went to Design Festa, which is an indescribable sporadic DIY art event in Tokyo. Basically, creatives can hire a cubicle space in one of the enormous halls, and exhibit their work. But in a city like Tokyo, this can mean around 6000 exhibitors. The result is artistic overload. Some of the exhibits are just plain trashy, others are weird, others stimulating, others utterly extraordinary. But for just sheer variety, the event is unbelievable. For me, the best thing was a superabundance of postcards. I collect postcards. I collect weird, nonphotographic (or at least not representationally photographic) postcards. Every second cubicle was selling postcards as some way to recoup the cost of hiring their space, and amongst the couple of thousand exhibits I managed to walk past in the day, there were some pretty bloody cool postcards! Yay! I’ve put up a selection of photos from design Festa for you to peruse.
